     Outstanding Places of Vinnytchyna
 

      Vinnytchyna is rich in remarkable places. There are not a few beautiful corners of nature, historical places in its territory, connected with the heroic past of our people, museums, monuments and busts, that immortalize the names of famous people of our Motherland for their work and feats of arms. There are a lot of places in Vinnytchyna, connected with the sojourn here of outstanding workers, statesmen, writers, composers, painters. Architectural monuments of the ancient times have survived in different places.
      The greatest part of historical monuments and memorable places is situated in Vinnytsya. Interesting materials of history of the town and Podillya are collected here in the Museum of local lore, history and economy. One of the most ancient arhitectural monuments of Vinnytsya is "Muri", that is a complex of protective constructions that were built in XVII cent. for a Jesuitical board. The buildings were enclosed with a great fence with towers and gun-slots. Now there is a regional museum of local lore and regional archive in the premises of "Muri".
      An obelisk, established near the 3-d school in the place where Polish-gentry troops had been defeated by the cossack detachments headed by the colonel I.Bohun in 1651, reminds about the fight of Ukrainian people against Polish gentry.
      On the celebrating of the 20th anniversary of the Great Victory over German facsism fire to eternal glory was set on the graves of the Patriotic War soldiers on the memorial (in the Kozytsky street).
      In Vinnytsya one can find memorable places connected with the fight of the working masses against German-fascist invaders. In the Bevz street, 29, the city underground organisation staff was situated. The underground printing-house was situated in the Leningradska street, 17.
      In the Bevz street, in the house where M.M.Kotsyubinsky was born, the literary-memorial museum of this writer was opened.
      There are a lot of outstanding places in the outskirts of Vinnytsya.
      There is a large stone named "The rock of Kotsyubinsky" on the picturesque bank of the Southern Bug. Here, according to accounts, the famous Ukrainian writer wrote his early works.
      In the outskirts of Vinnytsya, in the Pirogov village, there is a Museum-farmstead of the great scientist-surgeon M.I.Pirogov, who has lived here during the rest 25 years of life. At a distance of 1 km. from the farmstead, in the center of village under the belfry a crypt is situated where M.I.Pirogov's body remains, embalmed by his apprentice professor D.I.Vivodtsev.
      A house where a Russian Marine officer O.F.Mozzaisky, the inventor of the first plane of the world lived in 1869-1870, is situated in a large park in a workers town Voronovitsa.
      A workers town Nemirov is situated on the south-east from Vinnytsya. Here a house where an outstanding Ukrainian writer Marko Vovchok (Maria Olexandrivna Vilinska) lived, has remained. Now a memorial museum to this writer has been created in this premise. In a great park there is a Nemiriv house of rest, that is well-known outside the district. The house in which it is situated is an architectural monument of the XIX century. Outstanding people were here in this park in their time: Russian commander O.V.Suvorov, writer Onore de Balzak, composer Ludvig van Bethoven.
      A great Russian poet M.O.Neckrasov was born in 1821 in Nemirov.
      In the outskirts of Vinnytsya there are the rest of the Skyth City of VII century B.C., that is one of the greatest in Ukraine.
      The rest of surface ground fortifying constructed in the period of the liberation war of Ukrainian nation in 1648-1654 have remained in an old Ukranian town Bratslav.
      There are a lot of outstanding places in Tulchin and its environs. The headquarters of A.V.Suvorov were situated in this town in 1796-1797. The rest of ground construcnions, in which A.V.Suvorov tought Russian soldiers how to storm hostile fortifyings, have remained near Tulchin, near the villages of Timanivka, Nestevarka, Kinashev and Dranka. There is a stone house in the center of Timanivka where A.V.Suvorov lived. Now a museum is here. So-called "Suvorivsky Wells" have remained in the forest behind the village. In 1954 a monument to A.V.Suvorov was erected in Tulchin. Being in Tulchin and Tumanivka, Suvorov wrote his book "Science to Win".
      In 1816-1826 Tulchin was one of the centers of Decembrist movement in Ukraine. P.I.Pestel, the organiser of Decembrists in the South of Russia, lived in that times in a house №20 in the Pestel street. Here he met A.S.Pushkin. The Decembrists also gathered in the 1-st house in the Lenin street, where a museum of the local lore is situated.
      An outstanding Ukrainian composer N.D.Leontovich had been living for a long time in the same place. A Polish poet Yuliush Slovatsky was here too.
      Some architectural monuments of XVIII century have reminded in this town: the former palace of Pototsky and barracks of Suvorov's prodigy-bohatyrs.
      The town Ladizhin is situated not far from Tulchin. The rest of ground and subterranean fortifyings of XIV-XVII centuries have remained there. In the outskirts of Ladizhin, over the Southern Bug there is a place that differs with it's beauty and special attractiveness, due to it it's called "Switzerland of Ladizhin". The territory between Ladizhin and Chtvertinivka was called Batig in the past. There in May of 1652 the battle between cossack detachments and Polish-gentry troops was held. It is known in history as the battle of Knut. In this battle Bohdan Khmelnytsky has smashed Polish-gentry troops. The obelisk was established on the place where this historical battle formerly took place.
      A prominent Ukrainian scientist-microbiologist D.K.Zabolotny was born in 1886 in the village Chobotarka (today Zabolotne of the Krizhopil region). He was also burried here in 1929. In 1928 D.K.Zabolotny was elected the President of the Scintist Academy of Ukraine. In the house where he was born and had lived a museum was established.
      On 9th (21th) of September an outstanding Ukrainian composer and writer P.I.Nischinsky was born in the village Nementsi (the Illinets region). He was the founder of Ukrainian theatre music. He was the first to translate "Illiada" and "Odisseya" in Ukrainian. His song "The grey cuckoo is cuckooing " enjoys special wide popularity among people.
      In Vorozhilivka (the Tivriv region) when it was the national-liberation war of 1648-1654 against the Polish-gentry oppression sotnik Shpachenko stood here with his troop. A grave of a famous Ukrainian composer and writer P.I.Nischensky was situated in this village. The house, in which he lived, is held out.
      A national hero and favourite cossack commander D.Nechay was killed in the battle of Krasne (the Tivriv region). There are a high barrow and a monument in the field of the collective farm "Red Star" ( between the villages of Krasne and Chremoshne) and a grave of Bratslav colonel D.Nechay is situated there.
      The village Ometintsi (the Nemiriv region) is the Motherland of a legendary hero of the first defence of Sevastopol (1854-1855) P.N.Kishka. Respecting the memory about the glorious defender of Sevastopol the sailors of the Black Sea Fleet constructed a bronze statue in his Motherland in the days of celebrating centerary of the first defend of Sevastopol.
      The villade Kalnik (the Illinets region) was a residence of Kalmak and Vinnits colonel I.Bogun in due time. Ground fortifyings of XVII century have intacted in this village. In a picturesque surroundings on the bank of the Rusava River the village Stina (the Krizzopil region) is situated. The rest of the fortifying of XVII century has intacted in its center in so-called "Castle Mountain". In 1651 these fortifyings were stormed by the Polish-gentry troops but they couldn't seize them. The rest of the Skythian city of IX-XI centuries has remained in the village outskirts.
      A famous Ukrainian writer S.V.Rudansky was born and lived in the village Chomutintsi (the Kaliniv region).
      A great Russian composer P.I.Chaykovsky has been to the villages Brailiv and Chomutintsi 5 times. Here he has written some of his wonderful works. For the first time he came here in 1878, and for the last time - in 1880. In Syomaky he has finished the work at the opera "The Orlean Virgin" almost completely. In surrounding villages P.I.Chaykovsky collected and mastered folk songs and melodies. The house in which he lived was defeated by the fascists. There is a rock in Brailiv outskirts in the picturesque surroundings where Chaykovsky liked to have a rest and write his music. People call it "The Chaikovsky Rock".
      In 1787 Ustim Karmrlyuk, the leader of the peasant movement in Podillya, was born in the village Karmalyukove, formely Folovchintsy (the Zhmerinka region).
      Mogiliv-Podilsky is the greatest settlement of the Subdniester part. Here one can find a museum of the local lore history and economy of the Subdniester.
      Not far from Mogiliv-Podilsky, in the village Ozarintsi, the rest of the fortress of the liberation war of Ukrainian people 1648-1654 are left. At a distance of 3 km from Grigorivka there are heels of one great town of the Skyth period in the forest. In the village Nagoryany in the sheer rock 7 caves, that were the habitation of primitive people, are situated in two stages.
      A bas-relief of T.G.Shevechenko is cut on one of the rocks by a skilled workman-patriot. There is a date under the bas-relief - "1920". During the temporary fascist occupation the bas-relief was damaged.
      At a distance of 3 km from the village Nagoryany near the Lyadova River a country with the same name is spread out. There are caves and the rest of a great cloister that is the architectural monument of XI-XIV centuries in limestone caves not far from this village. Besides the cloister some cells were cut on the rocks, but they are destroyed.
      There is a picturesque village Bronnitsa, in which one of the greatest caves of the Subdniester, where the population hid during the Tatar-Turkish armed attack, down the Dniester from Mogiliv-Podilsky.
      An outstanding Russian artist V.A.Tropinin, the master of painting of the first half of XIX century, lived in the village of Kukavka (the Mogiliv-Podilsky region). Here he has written a lot of well-known portraits and pictures, in particular portraits of the peasant-serf R.Barabosh and the viyt of the Kukavska gmina (district) Todosiy Babchal, picture "A young Ukrainian peasant", "A peasant with axe", "The Laundress", "The Gold-embroiderist", "The Wedding in Kukavka" etc. One of the most valuable works that were left by this famous painter for the Ukrainian people is the portprait of a legendary national leader Ustim Karmaluk. The church, built according to the Troopinin's project and under his supervision, who was count Morikov's serf, has reminded in Kukavka. This church is a very valuable and the only archtectural Tropinin's work.
      In the Yampil region the village Busha is situated where great events of the liberation fight of Ukrainian people against the Polish-gentry invaders in 1648-1654. A considerable part of these events is illustrated in N.P.Stritsky's, the Ukrainian writer, work of art "The Offence of Busha". The rest of fortresses, cellars, underground passages have remained in the centre of the village.
      At a distance of 3 km from Busha so-called Gaydamak Ravine is situated, where the Ushanka river is running. The ravine is rather beautiful and picturesque. On the right bank of Usanka in a stone rock a cave known as "The Gaydamak Cave" is situated. The ravine and cave, according to the description, were the settlements of the national avengers of XVII - gaydamaks.
      In the village Gontivka (formely Serby) in 1768 one of the leaders of the peasant revolt in Podillya I.Gonta was put to death by Polish gentry.
